Corporate profile

Nortel began doing business in Malaysia in 1978 - providing Meridian 1 PBX networking solutions through local distributors to blue chip companies, multinationals, hotels and government agencies. In 1996, a dedicated sales and support office was established in Kuala Lumpur to deliver digital networking solutions and advanced network services to the country's service providers. Today, Malaysia's largest service providers and many major enterprises are Nortel customers, including Maxis Communications, Telekom Malaysia, MEASAT Broadcast Network Services, Petronas, Great Eastern and SIRIM.

After establishing a local office, Nortel fully localized its Malaysian operation over a two-year period and and continues to make substantial investments in training local personnel. For example, to transfer advanced telecommunications skills to Malaysia and support the government's vision of Malaysia becoming a fully developed country by 2020, ten engineers were seconded to Nortel's USA, UK and Australian operations for a year of intensive hands-on training and experience.

Management and staff are currently focused in building Nortel's presence in Malaysia, working with service provider and enterprise customers to create a 21st century communications platform to drive national prosperity and global competitiveness.
